2013: The Year Of Balance

As a follow-up to my 2012 reflections post I thought I'd make a list of hopes for 2013.  I used to be really big on resolutions.  January 1st was one of my favorite days and I'd plot and plan and make lists of things I wanted to do that year.  I've kind of fell out of the big resolution planning the past few years, mostly because I'm happy with the way life is happening and I work on achieving my goals every day.  It's a nice feeling!  That said, there are some things I would like to see happen in 2013.

Eat To The Beet:  Since we're here I'll talk about the blog first.  I love blogging and I love the blog community and my blog friends.  When life gets busy and I'm stretched for time blogging gets put on the back burner.  When that happens I really miss it and get bummed out.  I'm hoping a more structured approach will help.  I'm going to try out a posting schedule.  Maybe Monday, Wednesday, Friday?  And if that's too much I'll switch to Tuesdays and Thursdays.  And I want to have more food journal posts ("What I Ate" style).

Vida Vegan Con:  Yep.  VVC is in Portland this year. I'm in Portland, and I have a ticket.  So excited!  And they just posted the schedule for speakers.  I'm planning my weekend already.  Who else is going to be there?

Me & a few lovely future nurse practitioners on campus in Hyden, Kentucky last summer. I made fast friends with these ladies and get to see them again in August!

Grad School/Career:  I will finish my first year of grad school in August, and fly back to Kentucky for orientation to year 2.  I plan on continuing to enjoy my program and classmates and do well in my courses.  This is my dream job.  I feel lucky to be doing the work.  I'm looking for opportunities to get experience in community/public health, women's health, and health promotion.

Travel:  Exploring new places is one of my favorite things.  I plan on taking at least one fun trip to a new place this year.  Where will it be???

Health:  As always, I want to do whatever I need to do to feel my best.  Last year I remained vegan, ditched gluten, and incorporated more greens and whole foods into my diet.  This year I plan on getting tested for celiac disease and following a more nutritarian way of eating.  I'd also like to do more yoga this year and do a better job of taking care of my back.

Balance:  So this is the theme for my 2013.  It's easy to get sucked into one area of life and spend every ounce of time and energy there.  Sometimes I have tunnel vision when it comes to projects, interests, and goals.  My hope for this year is to work on balance, break things up, spread my energy around a bit and keep myself from falling into the black hole of (fill in the blank).  I plan on a nice mix of work, school, and play.

  1. Sounds like a good plan. How do you plan to get tested for celiac? Genetic testing or blood test? Or endoscopy? If so I think the last two you have to eat gluten again. :-(

I don't know if I will be able to work the VVC into my trip to the NW. We hope to come visit this spring though.

    1. I would love to see you if you come to town.

Not sure about the celiac testing method. The reason I've been putting it off is because I'll have to eat it again and I get so sick from even the smallest amount these days.

  2. I'll be at VVC again! Very excited.
Have you read any of the Dr. Furhman books? I've been lurking around his website and have come close a few times to subscribing. I've heard so many wonderful things about nutrarian eating, and it's definitely the way I try to eat every day as well.

  3. Those seem like super attainable hopes for the year. I especially look forward to seeing your healthy eating/living posts (and what you eat when you're traveling).

  5. This sounds like a really great plan Nikki! I think balance is a perfect theme. So jealous that you get to go to VVC this year! I am so excited for you that you are working toward your dream job. I wish I knew what I wanted to be when I grow up ;) I'll get there someday lol. Anyway, love this post, it's great to see your goals for the year.

  6. I'm so excited to meet you at Vida Vegan!!! I've really enjoyed watching your blog blossom this year.

And I hope you continue to love your way of eating as 2013 moves forward. I appreciate a lot of nutritarianism, though I'm not in line with it in every way. No matter what, I hope your food gives you joy.

    1. Thank you, Gena. I'm very excited about VVC, too! I agree with you about nutritarianism. I love the nutrient-rich aspect of it and hope to incorporate more of that this year. Otherwise, I tend to make my own rules and do what feels and tastes the best :)
