Starting Each Day With A Healthy Habit

School is in full effect again which means figuring out how this whole life balance project is going to work.  So far I've done ok.  I left the house to see friends twice this weekend, which was awesome and helped me see that I can squeeze in a little social activity between study sessions.  Another part of this balance project is sticking with small healthy habits that help me stay energized and feeling good.

Having a warm water and lemon drink first thing in the morning has proven to be a good way to start my day.  The hydration and alkalinity seem to do good things for my body and set a nice tone for the day.  A few slices of fresh ginger have been a favorite addition lately.

Yeah, I still have my cup of coffee with soy creamer first.  But I feel like having the lemon water afterwards helps to wash away the acidity.  That's just my own personal rationale because I'm not ready to give up the morning coffee.  Balance.

After coffee and warm lemon water is green smoothie time.  Every morning I have a drink with blended greens.  I feel better when I start the day with a smoothie or a green juice.  Smoothies are faster with less clean-up, so that's what I've been having lately.  Here are a few from this week:

These are easy things I can do to get my day started right.  Hydration and nutrients set the tone for the day.  Yes, I'm still going to have my cup of coffee.  Coffee tastes wonderful to me and it makes me really happy.  Maybe someday I won't want it anymore, but for now it's part of the balance.

Hope your Monday is off to a great start!

  1. Oh that first smoothie sounds and looks so good! I like the idea of hot lemon water in the mornings... I just never have time for it! Ugh. It sounds dumb to make excuses for health though, huh?

    1. Thank you! Not enough time is my biggest excuse for everything. If I'm rushed, coffee wins. But I've been making more of an effort to make more time.

  2. I adore smoothies in the morning. I must admit, I'm still learning to like blended kale, but your smoothies look so good!

    1. Thanks, Rachel. I can't really taste the kale in these smoothies. With the right fruit/berries and nut butters the kale taste is overpowered.

  3. Oooh your smoothies look so gorgeous! Thick and amazing! I love that you add tahini to them, that must be so good! I have been meaning to add hot lemon water to my mornings but just haven't yet. I think between the lemon water and green smoothies that coffee is balanced out :) When I'm ready to add decaf coffee back as a treat I'm going to cold brew it so it cuts most of the acidity out. Anyway, great tip!

    1. Thanks! The tahini was kind of an experiment, but I liked it so much that I've been adding it to most of my smoothies now :)

  4. this may be a daft question, but can you taste the kale much? I'm always looking to get more greens in my diet, and this looks like a rather smart way of doing that. I love the look of the raspberry mango smoothie in particular...

    1. The taste of the berries and nut butters really cuts the taste of the kale. With the right combo you can't taste it that much. Smoothies are a great way to get more green in your diet :)

  6. Hot lemon ginger water sounds great, although I'd probably want it as my "take to work" beverage in the afternoon (I work late in the day). I was planning on buying ginger Yogi Tea, and that may be nice for convenience, but I think I would like to try "your recipe." :-)

  7. I love the lemon/ginger tea idea for the morning! I'm totally going to have to start doing that. And I've been doing green smoothies a lot lately too, since my roommate has a Vitamix - so awesome. And yeah, everyone's different with coffee. I've given it up for the month, but I'll probably go back to drinking it occasionally, it's so damn tasty.
